The Perfect Pecan Candy Recipe for Homemade Sweetness

A rich and buttery Southern-style candy, this old-fashioned pecan candy blends sugar, milk, and pecans into a nostalgic, melt-in-your-mouth treat. Perfect for gifting or snacking, it’s a sweet reminder of homemade traditions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups pecan halves

Instructions

Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper or lightly greasing it. Set aside.

In a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat, combine the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and evaporated milk. Stir constantly until the mixture begins to boil.

Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture reaches the soft-ball stage (about 235°F to 240°F on a candy thermometer). This usually takes 10 to 15 minutes.

Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract. Keep stirring until the mixture thickens and starts to lose its gloss.

Quickly fold in the pecan halves, stirring to coat them evenly.

Drop spoonfuls of the candy mixture onto the prepared baking sheet, forming small rounds.

Let the pecan candy cool and harden completely at room temperature before serving or storing.

Notes

  • Be sure to cook the sugar mixture to the soft-ball stage for proper setting.

  • Work quickly once the mixture thickens—timing is key.

  • For best flavor, use pure vanilla extract and fresh pecans.

  • Avoid humid days to prevent stickiness and poor setting.

  • Store in airtight containers lined with wax paper to maintain freshness.
